I love the magazine Real Simple. I just sat down for lunch and read an article where readers chime in on various topics. This month's topic was "What is your FAVORITE pantry staple." You wouldn't believe the answers. Here are some that made me think "Really?"
Saffron strands
Ancient Harvest quinoa pasta
Pine nuts
Hoisin sauce
Blue-cheese stuffed olives
Casina Rossa truffle and salt
Where are the real people? What about paprika? That is an answer I would expect. Sugar. Salt. Oregano. Thyme. Ketchup if you have kids.
As I continued to eat my egg, I wondered how do people get to this level of sophistication? I am lucky to get my egg made and eat it before the baby wakes up. Who are these people? Where do they live? Do they have jobs? And do they have chefs, nannies and a life?
I have staples. They are tea, milk, English muffins, ketchup, Kraft mac and cheese for the kids, fresh basil, salt, pepper, eggs and wine. I get fancy now and then but mostly, I am lucky to serve my family a hot meal on most nights.
So real people of the world, what are your pantry staples? Make me feel better. And don't you dare say Carina Rossa truffle and salt.

Kraft Mac n cheese for sure! Jasmine rice, Sugar in the raw, Morton Nature's Seasoning (use it for eggs, sauteed veggies, grilling, etc.), and most important of all...Hershey's Pure Dark Chocolate Squares!
My sister turned me on to Real Simple. Love it!!
Never had truffles in the house! Pantry staples are whole wheat pasta, crackers, and peanut butter. Always have yogurt, cilantro, tomatoes, and fresh fruit in the frig and shrimp and chicken nuggets in the freezer.
Glad you're back! :)
I MISS Real Simple! Can you see me crying tears of grief?
My staple? Wine
My kids' staple? Graham Crackers (although we can't get them here)
My husband's staple? Peanut Butter
My teenager's staple? Ramen Noodles
We're not fancy :)
I saw this as well when I was reading "Real Simple". I think the magazine is miss named cuz some of the things are simple but the rest....nope! LOL
I thin staples are..kosher salt, pepper, chocolate. The REAL simple neccessities in life:-D
I had to stop buying that magazine, because in fact, it was not "real simple" for my life. My staples are as follows: wine, emergency choclate in the form of Ritter Sport Milk Choclate with whole Hazelnuts, chicken nuggets, rice, frozen green beans, cheddar cheese slices, wheat thins, frozen biscuts and my favorite...bacon. I will admit to having some Major Grey's chutney in my pantry too for the more exotic cheese plate.
